Why Should I Seal Concrete?
Concrete sealing is important for protecting your stamped concrete from winter and to keep the colors rich. Some concrete does not need to be sealed if it has not been stamped. If your concrete is stamped, regular sealant application is required.
Where can I buy Sealant?
Do not get sealant from your local hardware stores! I recommend getting sealant from concrete specialists like Unicon Concrete Specialties. Avoid using water based sealants as these are low-quality. Acrylic based sealants is what we recommend.
Sealing Your Curbing: Quick Guide
Weather Check:
- Avoid extreme heat (can cause milky finish)
- Don’t apply below 7°C unless using a special mix
- Skip windy days to prevent dust/grass sticking.
- Avoid applying within a few hours of rain.
Prep Work:
1. Trim grass near curbing.
2. Clear mulch, dirt, and debris.
3. Pressure wash or scrub concrete, then let dry completely.
Application Tips:
- Use a brush or roller (better than spray for deeper protection)
- Apply evenly—no heavy puddles
- Cover joints thoroughly
- One coat per year is enough. Now you’re ready for a flawless seal!
How Often Should I Seal my Stamped Concrete?
For long-lasting protection and color, reseal:
First application: 2-4 weeks after installation.
Second application: 1 year later Ongoing maintenance: Every 2-3 years (or when colors fade).
Tip: Avoid over-applying sealant—excess can cause a white haze, but this can typically be corrected.
Which Sealant Should you Choose?
We recommend three options for your concrete curbing:
1. High-Gloss – Provides a shiny, polished finish (best for a sleek look).
2. Low-Gloss – Gives a natural, subtle sheen (ideal for a more understated appearance).
3. Super Smooth – Enhances color richness and creates an ultra-smooth finish.
Pick based on your desired look—whether you prefer shine, a natural tone, or deeper colors with a smooth texture.
Concrete Cracks: The Reality
Cracking is normal—weather changes and freezing temperatures cause all concrete to crack over time. While sealing helps minimize damage, it can't prevent cracks completely.
Protect Your Concrete:
- Avoid salt (it accelerates damage) - Keep heavy vehicles off decorative concrete (it's not designed for that weight)
Repairs:
- Small chips? We can help when our schedule allows.
- Cracks? Unfortunately, they're usually permanent. Stay ahead of damage with regular sealing—it's your best defense!
